WEEE Recycling: why Companies should Rely on a Qualified Partner
In a world increasingly focused on sustainability and material circularity, proper management of electronic waste is a priority for companies, public entities, and industrial operators. This article delves into the topic of WEEE, explaining what they are, what regulatory obligations they entail, and what economic opportunities their professional recycling offers.
What is WEEE?
WEEE – Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment – are waste generated by equipment powered by electrical or electromagnetic energy that has become obsolete, faulty, or unusable.
Examples of Professional WEEE:
- Servers, IT and telecommunications equipment
- Industrial monitors and displays
- Decommissioned photovoltaic panels
- HVAC equipment and refrigeration systems
- Industrial lamps and lighting fixtures
- Professional batteries and accumulators
Examples of Domestic WEEE
- Kitchen refrigerators and freezers
- Washing machines, dishwashers, electric ovens
- Televisions, decoders, remote controls
- Laptops, tablets, printers
- Mobile phones, chargers
- LED and energy-saving lamps
- Hair dryers, electric razors, scales
- Electronic toys and small appliances
Why is WEEE Recycling Important?
1. Regulatory Compliance
Improper management of WEEE leads to penalties, non-compliance, and environmental liabilities. The law requires traceability, authorized treatment, and complete documentation.
2. Environmental Impact
Many WEEE contain highly polluting substances (lead, mercury, CFCs, HFCs) which, if released into the environment, damage soil, air, and groundwater.
3. Economic Valorization
WEEE contains valuable and recoverable secondary raw materials: copper, aluminum, iron, glass, plastic, gold, silver, rare earth elements.
WEEE Has Value: NIKE* S.R.L. Buys Them
Many electronic wastes are not just for disposal, but represent a concrete economic resource.
NIKE* S.r.l. purchases selected professional WEEE based on type, volume, and recoverable value.
Common examples:
- Electronic boards with high metal content
- Decommissioned photovoltaic panels
- IT equipment with recoverable components
- Wiring, transformers, power modules
Thanks to our certified plant and specialized supply chain, we offer transparent evaluations and the possibility to monetize your technological waste, turning a cost into profit.
What is the Reference Legislation?
WEEE management in Italy is regulated by Legislative Decree 49/2014, which implements European Directive 2012/19/EU.
The decree establishes:
- WEEE categories: domestic and professional
- Obligation to entrust to authorized operators
- Traceability, loading/unloading register, and RENTRI system
- Minimum recovery targets and extended producer responsibility
NIKE* S.r.l. is an authorized operator, holding ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications, and provides complete regulatory assistance.
Our WEEE Treatment Plant: Efficiency and Sustainability
In our Rome facility, we process large volumes of WEEE, achieving some of the highest recovery rates in the industry.
Recovery percentages by type:
- IT equipment: up to 99%
- Photovoltaic panels: 98%
- Lamps and neon lights: 93%
- Refrigerators and air conditioners: 92%
- Industrial appliances: 90%
Only 4% by weight is sent for disposal.
